The importance of growing in understanding
David loved the Lord and truly exemplified what it means to be a friend of God. He wrote in the Pslams, “Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.”
David recognized that God was the sole reason for his existence. He understood God’s worth and made it known that he should be acknowledged as Creator. David sought to know the ways of the Lord by inquiring for understanding to learn his commandments. David’s cry reveals his humility and desire to learn from his Creator. It’s rare to find a heart so gripped and convinced about the worth of God. David knew that knowing the Lord not only brought blessing to his life but also satisfied him in every way.
When we live with the revelation of who God is and understand the advantage of obeying his ways, we won’t live with the dreadful feeling of “I ought to obey this and that.” If you want your motive to be rooted in love and not fear, simply pray and ask, “Lord, enlighten my eyes to see all the goodness found in obeying your ways.” A lack of understanding keeps us in the dark, hostile, and out of sonship. Understanding leads to light and removes the fear-based mentality that keeps us as orphans. If we want to overcome fear, we must cry out and ask God for hunger and the ability to understand his ways. At all cost, we must live on guard from apathy, laziness, and notions of self-sufficiency; because these things only get in the way of our pursuit of the Lord. And the lack of pursuit leads to a lack of understanding.
There is a blessing in keeping his ways, and I say this out of my own personal experience. We are all on this pilgrimage of discovering who God is and who we are in him. It is an individual and unique pursuit for everyone. Take courage and ask God daily for understanding in your prayer time. Ask him that he might teach you what you cannot see. (Job 34:32) He desires that you see him rightly. But your ability to do so hinges on your asking, the way to humility and understanding. Read the scriptures and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand them. When you make it a priority in your life, it will change you from the inside out.
